US President Donald Trump is again facing allegations of sexual assault: US journalist E. Jean Carroll accuses Trump of trying to force her to have sex in a locker room in the mid-1990s. The incident took place in 1995 or 1996, writes the 75-year-old in her new book, from which New York Magazine printed excerpts on Friday.
Donald Trump denies the allegations. "I have never met this person in my life," reads a statement from Trump circulated by the White House on Friday. "She is trying to sell a new book – that should indicate her motivation. It should be sold in the fiction department," Trump’s statement reads.
The journalist, known for her column in Elle magazine, said she met the then-real estate entrepreneur at New York department store Bergdorf Goodman. She says Trump asked her to advise him on buying lingerie for an unnamed woman. He had reached for a sheer lace bodysuit and suggested she try it on, she said. She jokingly suggested Trump try on the bodysuit himself, she said, and went into a dressing room with him.
"As the door closed, he lunged at me, pushing me against the wall," Carroll wrote. Trump, she said, pressed his mouth against her lips, pulled down her pantyhose, unzipped his pants and penetrated her. She eventually managed to free herself and fled the locker room, he said.
Trump has been repeatedly accused
There is no surveillance video or images, there is no testimony from vendors who were on hand at the time, Trump argues. "I thank Bergdorf Goodman for confirming they have no video recordings of such an incident because it never happened," the statement continued.
Carroll, by her own account, did not press charges against Trump for fear of reprisals. She had feared receiving death threats, losing her job and being "dragged through the mud."
Trump had been repeatedly accused of assaulting women. A whole series of cases are pending in U.S. courts – but so far without consequences for the president. Worldwide headlines had made the former porn actress Stormy Daniels, who according to her had an affair with Trump. Trump is said to have paid her and another mistress hush money during the 2016 election campaign.
